Landforms
A landform is a natural formation or area of land and there are a wide variety of landforms that cover and make up Earth. Some places in the world contain several of them and some places contain a few of them. This list of landforms provides you with the name and definition of each and the illustration above includes these landforms and more.
While these landforms are all over the Earth's surface, they are also all here in our continent, North America. There are just a few major landforms (most common) that make up the earth's surface: mountains, plains, oceans, plateaus and hills. Most major landforms take up a huge land mass. The oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian), for example, make up 70% of the total surface area of the world. The other 30% of the total surface area of the world is made up of the seven continents (Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia).
If we zoom in on Kentucky, you would find several unique features. Kentucky is made up of plateaus, plains, rivers, lakes, and mountains. One of it's most unique features, however, is Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system in the world being over 400 miles long. It's made up of limestone and karst which allows for this cave system to exist among its unique surroundings of rolling country hills and the Green River valley. Caves are formed by the weathering of rock and tend to extend deep into the ground. Mammoth Cave is a large connection of passageways that hold a sensitive and unique environment of species and rock formations. Geographers love studying this system and encourage others to also explore its rarity, but to be cautious because it is a precious landform and environment.
